As most of this list knows, I tend to use my cars a lot... and hard. I have an '01 S4... and it was converted to full "stage 3" stuff almost as soon as I bought it... K04s, injectors, MAF, large downpipes, LW flywheel and Southbend clutch, Milltek exhaust, IM isolators etc... When this was done, I addressed all of the common issues at the same time... coolant pump, VC gaskets, etc... I also replaced the entire control arm set.
Since this has been done, the car has been absolutely trouble free. It starts and runs like an appliance and uses no oil between changes. I've always run the oil I preach about (Rotella synthetic). The car has been run pretty hard and routinely fast... traversing the mountain west a bunch of times. It now has 180k miles on it, and still runs perfectly.
You could never say that modifying them is as cost effective as the I-5, but once done correctly, it runs great all the time.
As a final note, and to my embarrassment, this was also the first car I had to hand over to someone else to do the engine work... a first for me. My stage 3 parts sat in a box... my work/travel schedule didn't show any signs of relief. Getting impatient, I finally decided to have Brendan Rudack (Apikol) do the engine work, as I know his work is first rate and can be trusted.
I did the suspension work... control arms, coilovers, Hotchkis swaybars, and full RS4 brakes front and rear.
Even with 180k miles, this car seems like it'll be good for a long time to come. I really enjoy it, and the handling/braking is something the UrS can't ever compare with. The engine is smooth as silk, and even with K04's at high altitude, I could never whine about low end power. All in all, tough to beat.

Subject: [s-cars] B5 S4 opinions
What is the list opinion/experience with well sorted B5 2.7tt S4's? This
one has the ECU modified by APR and a few other minor pieces; APR Bi-pipe,
K&N cone intake and hoses. How do they hold up once they get through to
100k+?
Thanks,
Steve
