I do agree that the 20v variants rarely do what the 10v engines did. However, given that he ran the engine that low on oil, and the probable loss of oil pressure, lifters would certainly collapse and the oil would be forced out of them.

interesting you say that. the older 5-pot Audi MC's lifters were notorious
for that always used to have to 'pump up' after sitting but I never notice
lifter noise on the AAN. Maybe I just don't let it sit long enough,
although with my 3-4 week biz trips you'd think that'd be enough.
