The thread you referenced doesn't scare me at all- if the cam adjuster issue
is a sensor, it's not $$$$$ to fix. It is my understanding that the chain
tensioners fail, just the like crappy Audi 4.2 that I mentioned before- in
that case, you're talking about $$$$$ to fix.
If people are having 60k+ on the car without major issues, I don't see what
the problem is. CV boots failing- that's a big deal?
The biggest problem is going to find someone who can work on the car,
because the engine is really rare and weird for someone who wasn't
factory-trained on it. Also any parts unique to the W8 are going to be a
problem, which is what was mentioned in that thread.
The lack of popularity of the car is really simply because no one really
wanted a $40k VW Passat, no matter how the engine is.
