Hello Jim,

My wife's S6 has had near identical symptoms for about five years (from 100k
to 160k)! I've never been sure where the noise came from, and assumed that
it was a wheel bearing which would rapidly get worse and make it obvious
which one it was. I even bought the bearings and have a bearing fitting kit
from a bearing job on our previous S6. However, the noise hasn't really
changed in that time, and it doesn't really change significantly on
right-hand or left-hand bends, so it's probably not a bearing after all.

I suspected a couple of years ago that it might be the centre bearing in the
prop shaft, so I bought a used prop shaft off ebay, but haven't fitted it as
things have not got any worse.

Hey Guys,

As my car is just about to turn 100K, I think I may need a wheel
bearing.....I've heard a consistent whirr, whirr, whirr from the front end
for awhile, and it seems to disappear under tire noise at speed. Recently
upon slowing down, there has been a slight whoop, whoop, whoop instead of
the whirr.....there is a slight increase in the whirr sound upon cornering,
but its still pretty slight, and no whoop until I slow down, and even that
isn't all the time.....happens turning left and right, but the noise seems
to be coming from the right side.

So the question is, is this classic wheel bearing going bad syndrome, or
could it be a cv joint. Boots are intact, and the left one was serviced 10K
ago or so. In keeping with the recent theme, my right side front suspension
has also developed a "thump" noise.

Anyway to visually inspect to see if it's the bearing? If it's the bearing,
what's a reasonable cost for having this done? I think it might be above my
skills and tool set.

Thanks as always,

Jim Fleischer
