Good to hear you found the culprit(s). It will be interesting to hear what you get for measurements once the bearings are replaced. This will quickly tell you if there's been any damage to the rod.

You shouldn't need to execute any formal "break-in" procedures with just a bearing replacement.

Good luck...

Dave

Subject: [s-cars] Rod Bearing R&R

Hi list,

In following up to my last post, thankfully encouraged by particular listers
to remove my rose colored spectacles, thinking I was going to borescope to
delay the inevitable.. Well the bearings i ordered from 034MS friday
afternoon, were on my doorstep this evening. After helping someone who
should have had me t-chain their VR orignally, they will be towing it to me
after all, I got a late start, im at the point of first specs.

green plastigage and feelers say; con-rod #1 axial = .203mm... radial =
.051, generally.. there was a slight bowtie towards the .076 in the center
and closer to .038 toward the outer edge of the shell. Appreciating
consistency, this is not optimum, but i mention it moreso to be precise in
typing. The line was pretty straight, slightly off. Clearly in the .051
range with a slight ingress/egress if you will. ..Its late, pardon me and
my keyboard is missing a couple keys and the m key doesnt M, bah!
proofreading!

my sweet lullaby at this point is #4 main cap thrust bearings measuring
nearly double the limit of .3mm and the one nearest the dampener pulley
found loose enough to be moved easily by my feelers, bit of an ohsht moment,
whereas the bearing near the flywheel is snug, it will budge, but snug. The
tick the front one made when my feeler pushed it reminded me of last week
around 3k RPM..

good thing all I have to do tomorrow is finish this project, replace an axle
in a vw, thermostat in another then begin to draft & complete a court motion
to file wednesday morning ,yay!

anyone use lucas break in oil additive? just a thought. I use the stabilizer
regularly(1/2qt usually) and like it. BTW I did run marvel mystery oil
through the crankcase last wednesday before I parked it thursday and
question if there would then be a problem with oil analysis.

good evening soon to be morning,Brian
