[s-cars] introduction and some beginner questions

Hey, Taka,

Interesting. I had been running Mobil 1 15W50 in the RS2'ed S6, but
recently switched back to 5W50 Syntec, which had been my favorite in the urq
before the first formula change. When the dealer 'accidently' put Audi spec
5W40 in the S6, it blew a quart of oil within a thousand miles...it had
NEVER burned a drop in 5,000 miles before. It took two changes of 15W50 M1
to stop the oil loss completely, although it didn't lose but a 1/2 quart on
the first change. I will not run 5W40 in the old turbo 5's...not since
moving to the Gulf Coast, at least. I do have both Syntec 5W40 and Rotella
T6 5W40 in the garage for the A4's, with 1.8T and 2.0T engines. For my
conditions, it seems the Syntec runs smoother and gives easier rpm's than
the current M1, which just didn't seem the same over the last two changes
with it. I had just stocked up on Syntec and done the first change when a
lister posted the info that sopme racing teams had stopped using it due to
engine failures, and had that old,'I knew something wasn't right!' reaction.

By the way, I test drove an '06 S60 R on Sunday; silver/blue-black and full
body kit. I had forgotten just how much it didn't feel like an Audi. The
heavy front end and the truck-like steering radius just don't do it for me,
but those seats are so nice. Anyway, with just over 50k, new tires, but
needed new brake pads, his bottom line is $18k, but I think I'll pass, and
would at a lower price, too.

Just FYI, and YMMV,

Steve

Welcome!

1. There should be a google link on the audifans website that will allow you
to search the list archives.

2. You want to search for ETKA- this is the official Audi parts catalog, but
it's not available to the public and it's dealer-only- however, you can find
it if you are resourceful- it's a bootleg and thus, illegal to own.

4. Big can of worms- I've always liked Mobil 1 15W50 for the Audi I-5 and
switch to 10W30 for winter use. I've had consumption issues with M1 10W30,
though- so I'm not sure that is the best choice. I've had horrible issues
with Castrol Syntec 5W50 (massive lifter tick), won't use that again. I will
second Dave Dawson's recommendation of Shell Rotella Synthetic- good stuff.
That's made for heavy-duty diesel engines, which put a lot of stress on oil.
The nice thing about Rotella is that it's relatively cheap.

I can't give you any further recommendations- I'm not loyal to any single
oil- I run Castrol TWS 10W60 in one car, Castrol Syntec 0W30 German Castrol
in another car and Mobil 1 15W40 turbodiesel truck oil in another car. I
also have a small stockpile of Pennzoil Platinum 10W30 when it was still
Grp. V full synthetic.

That's a big change, going from an E36 to an S6 Avant.

Taka
