Hi Chris,
The same thing happened to my 1993 S4 last week. It was the starter motor. It's easy to get to the starter from underneath. Remove the belly pan and it's in front of and above the front sway bar. Make sure there's power to the starter main power (stud where two thick cables connect). Disconnect the starter solinoid signal (thin wire above the main power cables). It's tight to remove, pinch the lever and work it out. With car out of gear and brake and clutch in, have someone start the car and see if power is going to the signal. If there is it's likely the starter. If not then maybe the ignition switch. The starter is easy to r'n'r and not too expensive for a rebuilt unit ($150CND)
