Thanks Tony - good to know how the detent works.
I was able to get the plastic gears to slide to one side - then w/a
couple of sharp raps from a BFH, got it to start retracting. Pushed the
plastic gears back in. Not sure if that *fixed* the problem as I think
there must be some damage at the top of the extension jamming the
mechanism.
It's in the right position now - so ready for the wife to start using
it.

You lift slightly on the front of the extender as you extend/retract it.
This pulls it out of the "detents".

way extended. Being an Italian family, this feature will not be used. I
tinkered with it a bit last night, noted that there is a metal rod
extending between the adjuster rails that have plastic gears at each
end. I could get those to move slightly, laterally, but it made no
difference.
