[s-cars] GoPro camera installation : where is the best spot ?

I used the stock 'open' back cover for 2 years now.  Mounted on the roof the chances of waterlogging it are slim.  I sure makes sense to drill a small mike hole in a stock back cover.  I would also think that drilling where the mike is, with a 90 rubber boot facing rearward would work.  My plan is to order up the housing with the openings for accessories, booting that, so we can watch what's happening in car, as well as, keep the battery charged.  At 7degrees ambient temps, I managed 33min on a single film, but the battery life is definitely compromised.  Chad's camera closed down at 6 minutes in, so it's not consistent.

WRT lens, I don't put anything on it, never have.  I suppose something like Rain-x might work, but even with snow coming at the camera for a couple years now, I haven't had any video compromised because of it.  Remember the housing is ambient temp, so snow shouldn't stick anyhow.  Never used it in the rain.

I would definitely tether if you mount to the quarter, a zip tie and some securing line would work well.

I have a second housing that is drilled on the back cover (sent free of charge by GoPro after I’ve send them a picture of my 2 little girls on a Mini Cooper toy car with the GoPro mounted on the hood). 
They say that’s the best way to get quality sound without jeopardize the camera integrity.
 
I’d like to see the wheels in action a bit from a quarter panel mount, but I’m afraid of the snowbanks… Maybe a lanyard/tether would keep the camera with the car in case of an involuntary dismount ?
 
Do you apply some water repellent on the lens to get the snow off by itself ?
