Ah, this list is always so helpful and entertaining at the same time.
It's been a day with lots of information, suggestions, a few leads, and
a strange turn of events with my SUV.
Bruce Mendel found a 2001 6-speed that is going through his local
auction place tomorrow morning. I'm reviewing some information he
forwarded to me so there's a possible car for sure.
I've unearth a handful of 6-speeds on craigslist and out of those a
couple have potential - am getting more information on them.
The 2002 S6 option is interesting but the manual transmission is not
negotiable. Remember, my girlfriend will be the primary driver 5 months
of the year and it will sit for the rest of it except for weekends and
towing my sailboat. She's not into the full-on high performance
S-flavor cars - she always tells me I go too fast in mine and knows how
much time I spend tinkering with it part for necessity and part for
enjoyment. The ride height is an issue - she's coming down from a full
size SUV Trooper which does ride rather high from the drivers seat. We
both enjoy driving manuals as all our vehicles are 5-speeds right now
(my S6, her e36 328i, and even the Trooper). Stop and go traffic is a
rarity and snow covered mountain roads is a regular occurrence in the
winter and a mile long entrance to the barn is a multi-times a day
happening.
The Allroad is a temporary compromise for her as we are ultimately after
a VW Touareg with the V10TT TDI as a tow vehicle for horses. They are
out of my price range this year and maybe next year too so in the mean
time we'll still have a SUVish car for light duty hauling and towing
that is still in the 4-rings line and that I have lots of other insane
knuckleheads to help my keep it on the road and upgrade anything that
wears out - guess that's how I ended up with my RS2ed S6 - damn all
you! Yea, the Touareg is only an automatic but what else has nearly
600ft lbs of torque and style? Sorry - we don't fit the typical horse
people mold - just can't do a big pickup truck on a regular basis and
there aren't many SUV's out there with a 7,000 lb towing capacity and
can get in the mid 20s mpg. But that's a year or more off down the road.
Now the Trooper that I was giving up for dead had a bit of a
resurrection today - I finally found a replacement engine at a decent
price too. So, now I'm in the process of getting it shipped here and
plan to bring it back to life. That will take a few weeks for sure so
the Allroad will fill the void and probably become her car of choice
during the winter and I'll get it in the summer for my towing needs
which I'd like better than the Trooper anyway.
So, keep those leads and entertainment coming. I'll let you all know
which Allroad we end up with.
