With the kits, there are ballast compatibility issues, but that
pertains to connectors, not the voltage output of the ballast. When you
get to D2S bulbs, that is an industry standard the bulb must meet to
carry that designation, and the bulb base and connector is
standard as well. You will see differences in light output and color
within the standards that are significant enough that you never
want to replace a single bulb but both.
Despite Abe's decision, I would never advise buying a used bulb. In
this case a brand new pair is little more than that one used
bulb.
