[s-cars] Piston removal

I say anyone that needs to re-hone bores after 20k, has bigger problems. I bet they look factory new. WRT main bearings, sure they can be replaced in situ, it's not easy, but it certainly can be done, btdt. First thing to do is take number 3 off, and ck it for wear. If none, take off 2 or 4. If wear on 3, take off 2 AND 4. New crank bearings can be lubed and slid into service with the crank in situ, btdt2. Again, given that this was a motor build 20k ago, I see no reason to even inspect them.
My bottom line .02... If a motor was built 20k ago and just needs pison rings, just do them and call it a day. I wouldn't even do rod bearings, because they are not even broken in yet. Remember to track rod cap orientation and rod bearing orientation (hardened shell goes on top).
This is a single day job, or a leisurely weekend job, simple and straight forward.
HTH, IMO, IME and my .02 arbitraged thru the peso.

If you're talking about using a flex-hone, just remember to match the grit
to the ring material & clean the bejesus out of bores afterwards, and do
protect the crank.
What about the main bearings - can they be replaced in-situ? Since the
crank won't be separated from the saddles and direct measurements can't be
done, what's the current wisdom on verifying bearing clearances?

Soon to be tackling this on my '95 Avant

Late to this discussion, but I'll put in my .02 expost facto. I've built
many 20vt in situ, and have no problem/s doing it that way. If you just did
honing 20k ago, there is no reason to do it again. My guide has always been
to look for crosshatching in the bores, if you can see it throughout the
stroke, it's fine. If you don't, take a set of monkey-balls and run a quick
hone down the bores. I learned this, not on the I5, but rebuilding engines
with my dad decades ago. Total time is under 5 minutes for that procedure,
if it's even needed.
I have a 20vt turbo engine in one of my cars that I'm doing this exact
surgery to, in situ. I will be doing the same thing in a couple weeks to
another. I pull the head as complete as it can be, take a look at the
bores, and pop in pistons with new rings and rod bearings. Drop the head
back down, and call it good. I have done this several times to 20vt cars
and 10vt cars alike, without a crosshatch related failure. At 20k, the
crosshatching should be all but perfect, IMO/E.
Keep it SS I say.

Thanks Cody, Vittorio, Chris,
You've convinced me to take out the engine. Although it was honed about
20,000 miles ago (1st rebuild, cheap piston rings), I think I'll make the
appropriate effort for such a classic car.
