[s-cars] Half shaft removal - Outer?

No pictures necessary, but I'd never use an allen bolt for any drive shaft. Even on the center drive shaft, I routinely replace those allens with triple square bolts - it doubles the applied torque area vs the allen head. A torque spec of 59lb/ft on the 6 driveshaft to flange bolts exposed to the elements can make allen bolt removal a whole bunch of unfun.
Glad you *still* have a box full of them Dave, not using them is a good thing.
Cheers
SJ

Can't say I've ever seen allen bolts in the trans-flange either Dave
Find one with an aftermarket boot kit that came with replacement bolts - allen head. Need a picture? I've got a small box full of them.

You guys work too hard. I do all S-car outer CV boots with the driveshaft attached to the trans... Pop the tie rod, and the end will come out of the hub without pulling the ball joint pinch bolt or messing with the ABS. Can't say I've ever seen allen bolts in the trans-flange either Dave, but I suppose one could buy the right size to fit. That's a lot of torque on an allen head for the next R&R though. Agree that if you really want to pull the driveshaft out, cleaning out the bolt head, and a seating-tap of the triple square into the bolt head, will save you a lot of headaches of stripping one.
Cheers

You should be able to remove the axle without undoing the ball joint pinch, and
yes you will want to get the inner joint clear of the cup and elsewhere/up in
the engine bay to get the needed clearance for the outer joint to clear the hub.
It will be a bit of a fight with the outer joint at near full bend, but it will
clear without messing with the ball joint. IMHO, separating the ball joint
introduces more headaches (the need to get it back in solo) than it eliminates.
One trick when putting it back in, is to put a zip lock or similar sandwich
baggie over the inner joint, as this will keep the grease in the joint and the
dirt out while you're fishing it around your engine bay looking for that magic
reinstallation angle. Once the inner joint is roughly lined up with the cup,
you can remove the baggie and start putting all the hardware back in.
Good luck come Monday.
