[s-cars] re-coating wheels

I took a slightly different route, as my RS4 wheels had been curbed
(somewhat heavily by the wife). The tires were off! I used an air orbital
sander and cleaned up the lips and also the entire wheel. Then I sprayed
them with high build primer and sanded that until the entire wheel was in
pretty good shape. Once I had them to the way I wanted them I sprayed them
with Automotive paint in a medium silver. It was quite a bit of work, but
overall I'm pretty proud of the way they turned out!
In retrospect I think if it's a winter wheel, I'd just go the powdercoat
route, in whatever silver or grey you wish!
If you're not up for the cost, rattle cans always work:-)
I'm going to do the UrS4 8 X 16s in the exact fashion as my RS4 wheels!

I had the 8 x 16s stripped and powder coated with the same stock grey color,
twelve years ago. Today they still look perfect and are always very easy to
power wash with brake dust easily washing away.

Jim,
I just redid a set of polished a8 wheels because they were doing the same
thing. The clear coat had gone to hell and they needed some attention. The
best way to strip the old off is some "Klean strip" brand paint/or aircraft
stripper. I'm not trying to sell you that product but I tried some others
and they did not work as well (ace hardwares brand worked good too).it's
easy to use and what it doesn't get you can hit with a wire wheel and it'll
flake off. If there's some residual just hit it again and let it sit. The
wheel coating was not meant to come off and is a real pain.
As far as coating them. If they are winter wheels hit them with some good
primer and have fun with them. My winter car(subaru) is getting some
white/safety green wheels tomorrow.
