[s-cars] AAN valve cover questions

In an attempt to replace my valve cover gasket, I ran into two    problems, both as a result of previous owners/servicers.

1. It appears that some form of cement/sealant was used. Where can one safely get leverage to pry or lift the damn valve cover? I didn't want to use any of the breather ports, and I can't seem to find any lip or anything else to help me lever it up.

2. P.O. stripped the front lower threads in the head. Bolt was loose, came out with the insert attached to its threads. Can't tell if it was Time-Sert or HeliCoil. Is it safe to buy a new insert and use the installation tool (anyone got one to lend?) or do I need to go through the whole process from the beginning?
