The short/stupid answer is advanced engine management systems, and piston/combustion chamber design. Motorcycles have been doing it for years.

Does anybody have any idea how Mazda is able to run a 13:1 compression ratio
on their normally aspirated 2.0 liter SKYACTIV engine. on regular unleaded?
How are they avoiding knocking?

This engine is rated at 155hp and they claim 40mpg hwy in a SKYACTIV Mazda3
with 6-speed automatic.
