----- When I asked that question , some time ago,  I was told the ecu just retards the spark.   I have to think there is more to it than that.  When I asked that question, Direct Injection was not on regular production cars .   So mixture and timing are the ECU 's main inputs, maybe the direct injection makes a huge difference somehow.   Interesting Question.
