I'll have to second John's experience. The wiring loom by the left hing where it enters into the jamb had several frayed/broken wires in my case.

I had the same problem on our when we bought it. The seller said that just closing the tailgate locking the entire car was a 'feature.' 

Turned out to be the left wiring loom. I had to repair a bunch of broken/frayed wires in there. 

You might also have something going on with the vacuum piping at the tailgate lock since you can't unlock/lock the whole car from there.
