[s-cars] Fuel Pump R&R urS6 avant - Update - Partial Success.....High RPM lean out still present

Jim

Have you checked the turbo bearings? Sounds like it may not be spooling to
full rpm. If the turbine has any radial or axial run out, this could be the
problem, especially if the sound under boost has changed.

Subject: [s-cars] Fuel Pump R&R urS6 avant - Update - Partial
Success.....High RPM lean out still present

Hey All,

Thanks for the help......got the new Bosch pump in and she starts, runs, has
a bit better throttle response (I think) but the high RPM lean out condition
persists. It was the original pump, so good preventative maintenance,
however, I want my kick in the pants power back!
I can hear the turbo whine, but it used to literally scream, and I mean
SCREAM unusually loud, to the point that when I bought the car 80K miles
ago, I thought something was wrong with it. Now that is doesn't scream, I'm
thinking something is wrong with it. There is literally no back seat push
above 4K RPM. Power is very linear, like a NA engine (feels like the 7A in
my old coupe! Depressing!). Here's whats' been replaced so far....

Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter, O2 Sensor, Fuel Pressure Regulator, CPS, cleaned the
MAF properly. Plugs are NGK's that Dave Dawson recommends and have about 7K
on them. May swap them out anyway. Could it be the wastegate diaphragm?
Fricken coils? POS? I think I've addressed all the fuel components, maybe
not the relay. Any other thoughts?

Just pulled codes......2222 ECU Internal Pressure Sensor I think
I'm F*cked........

Thanks again as always.....

DaveF and I have differing views on this, I think he's laughably moronic
to go in via the 3rd row. He thinks I'm so stupid as to be a hazard to
myself and others for wanting to go in from the 'front' (aka climb in a rear
door with the seats folded, remove the (5?) semi-hidden screws that hold the
carpet to the back of the seats, then take out the cargo loop on either
side. But srsly both work fine.

Either way once the carpet is up it's all just as you see in most online
pics except Avant is way significantly better than the
crawl-in-and-suffocate sedan access. I of course I do keep both doors open
as well as the hatch to keep good fresh air flowing through, and that way
not as much cigarette smoke gets in my eyes as much while I'm working.

      Jim,

The Fuel Pump access cover is located between the third row seats and
the second row seats. You can either pull up the carpet from the back of the
fold down second row seats or from the carpet that dives down under the
third row seats (that's where I have accessed it). You may need to remove a
couple of fasteners for the 3rd row seat belts to get the looped holes in
the carpet out (when you see it you will know). The access panel is the
black circular thing in the photos you've probably seen already.

      Good Luck.

        Hey guys,

I'm replacing the fuel pump in my avant today (hopefully!) and found
a good writeup on Quattroworld by Dave F. (Thanks Dave!) Just a couple
questions, as this is my daily driver and can't afford to screw this up
today!

First off, where is the pump on the avant? Figured I'd pinpoint it
before I started taking up carpet haphazardly. My car has the third row
seat if that matters.

I replaced the fuel filter a couple months ago....it is recommended
to replace the filter when replacing the pump. Do I really need to at this
point since it was replaced so recently? (It would take me out of the game
today unfortunately.)

Are there any specific tools needed?

        Any helpful BTDT's? Encouragements welcome.....

The tank is drained about as far as I can without getting stuck on
the side of the road and I have the afternoon off......thanks for the help
fellas!

        Best regards,
