Jim have you checked the vacuum lines a the back of the head? There is a little cluster of them there and they get really heat cycled. I have found on more than one occasion that there was a leak there causing the map sensor to think the pressure is less and thus not allow full balls out power. This is a very easy thing to check repair. I do not think this would cause cutout but will definitely be down on power.
