Tom,

Try fixing it , if for no other reason, so that you can liven up the List with your posts (it was a good read).

 I use to have a '72 TR-6, pre 5 mph bumpers, wire wheels, electronic overdrive, and a hardtop for winter, that sadly pretty much rusted away. That beast still has a warm spot in my heart after all these years, primitive as it was. If you can put up with British Leyland and The Prince of Darkness (Lucas for those of you that haven't had the pleasure of owning an eccentric british auto) nonsense then you've got a good chance with the Audi-gods. 

That plus the fact we both currently own something old and British and old Audi,  requires some sort of "special" support group. Misery loves company ;)
