[s-cars] Winter Tires??

I claim the standard is the Blizzack, not because of my preference, but because one would be hard pressed to find *any* winter tire comparo without at least 1 Blizzack model inserted... In the last 10+ years! I also claim clearly, that any silica compound winter tire is a step up from a non silica winter flavor, and have made the claim that the difference within the brands is driving skillset between the best of the tested.
What I don't get in most winter tire discussions, is all the various definitions of 'winter' in various/nefarious states. To a street driven quattro, that possibly 'should be' 90% of the conditions on which your tires are rotating during winter months. If that's on our public streets and highways, a non silica snow tire is certainly better than an all season, but I'm trying to figure out in which winter states driving a quattro without studs, where a non silica tire has any true advantage over a silica compound winter tire.
What I don't get is an oil-type winter tire discussion. If you can't justify the synthetic (insert any silica compound winter compound tire) get the co-synthetic (a non silica snow).... Or do nothing and run the dyno oil (all season tires). Within those three categories, the bigger variable is driver skillset, than any 'review', objective or subjective.
And, if anyone thinks I'm biased toward any particular winter tire, it would be good to search the archives, as I reviewed several non-silica tires against silica compounds at Steamboat for years before I stepped up a pay-grade.
Cheers
Scott 'torsen/steamboat boy' J
