You should have been able to unlock the door by using the key in the lock.
You probably have a vacuum hose leaking.

Subject: [s-cars] Door lock issues
Hey all,
Just took a client to lunch in my '93 S4. Windows down, I believe he was
resting his arm on the lock plunger on the top of the door and locked it.
When we got back to my office, his door was locked and would not unlock.
All other door locks work fine, both with internal lock switch and IR
remote. Passenger door lock will try to move the plunger up and down, and
it moves slightly, but will not unlock. Seeing this movement, I do believe
the vacuum line is still attached? I was slightly embarrassed by having my
6'-4" client climb over the console and out the drivers side.
I have not done any diagnosis yet obviously, but wondering if anyone has any
BTDT on this? What to check first?
I guess it's passenger door maintenance time as the cable on the rear door
has been disconnected from the inside handle (again) for some time....joy!
Any help appreciated, as always.
Ron
