VCDS  (VAG-COM to us old guys) is the diagnostic software for this  
vehicle, Jim, and the free light version is satisfactory for this  
car.  You will get very little additional with the full version.  This  
free version is a step up from blinking codes, though.  I have newer  
Audis also, so I use a full version that does a little more, but  
probably not $300 worth just for this car.  You can buy connectors on  
ebay that work well.  The service manual contains much information on  
repair actions to take for the fault codes.
