[s-cars] Castrol GTX High Mileage Oil - the real issue is not "seals"

Sure, that's an option too... But, I've spoken to a engineering types at OE and race builders both, as those these barriers are used for new/rebuilt engine break-ins. Most will only use oils with the additives already present. Haven't seen any documentation from SAE or additive companies why this is preferred, but these builder-types don't use them because they have stories to of toasted engines that was traced to 'adding' these barriers to oil. But I didn't spend a lot of time on that topic, as most diesel truck oils still have the additives at the higher levels.

Looking through alll the varieties of M1 oils is like watching the marketing of Coke products. Intereting trivia I found looking at this a few years ago: Audi TSB claims M1 TDT oil satisfies most of the latest 50x.xx oil standards, but M1 TDT oil doesn't list any 500.xx specifications on their label. Why? I suspect because turbo 'car' owners are a different target market at the Company. I have also seen inquiries to the engineers at M!, who are obviously told to tow the marketing line.

Disclaimer: Follow the oil recommendations in your owners manual, and the label of the oil manufacturer... (There ya go)

Cheers and HTH

How about using synth of choice and tossing in a can of BG MOA which is a ZDDP
additive with some other stuff in it? Or Brad Penn which is a very high quality
Dino oil with plenty of zinc but still pretty cheap.

(OMG) the switch from synthetic to dino oil. This is an educated mechanic
legitimate concern about M1 products reducing the levels of Zinc and Phosporus
to comply with the lower EGR/catalyst effects of wear additives, driven by the
EPA>Car Manufacturers. One might argue that, esp on cold start, an engine at
245k would benefit from extra ZDDP(dino)/ZDTP(synth) Zinc and Phosphorus.
Previous levels were in the 1100-1300 range, the new standard is sub 800. M1
Claims this change is safe for new and 'old' vehicles, but I think that is plain
marketing BS.

or a Delvac Synthetic, as both retain much higher levels of cold start/worn
engine tolerance, wear barriers. Short of that, a change to a Castrol dino
product will yield the same results.

happy to back up the educated mechanic recommendation and concern, than anyone
focused on 'swelling seals' totally missing the legitimate issue.
