I don't know... to me, a tough call.  I suppose it depends on what you're going to do with it.  Steve makes some good points.

IMO, if you're using it for stock power, or up to the 360whp range, it would be worth it... simply because you wouldn't need to consider high end connecting rods.

The stock pistons, IMO, are not an issue irrespective of power goals.  The stock pistons are very tough.

That cost is about $1005US with current exchange rates.  Pretty cheap if you consider the hassles of rebuilding from scratch... trips to the machine shop, all the parts cleaning, the potential for needing the next piston size, etc...

Then add up the minimal parts and machine work... you'll come close to that figure, more if you need pistons.

As to putting the engine into service, I would only remove the rod/main bearing caps to inspect and put some assembly lube on them.  I don't think I'd completely tear it down... assuming it was stored reasonably well.

If it were in my neighborhood and I didn't have to pay for it to be shipped, I'd buy it.

I've been down this road before- I've negotiated on a number of NOS short
blocks, heads, and full engines over the years. Overall, I'd say a short
block is the least desirable. Most people that are building blocks will
want to upgrade the rods and swap out the pistons, so they are of limited
value (and rarely need replacement if they aren't going to be upgraded). A
brand new head is a very different proposition, given the AAN's tendency to
crack.

So, if you discount the value of the new rods and pistons, machine work on
a good used block and a full set of rod and main bearings is going to be
cheaper than what people typically want for an NOS block. This is
especially true since I wouldn't just take an NOS block and drop it in a
car- it's been sitting around too long. I'd have it stripped, cleaned, and
reassembled just like a used block.

Obviously, YMMV, but I would say no.
