BTDT2 several time in I5 20vt including S4/6.  OE rings and run the flex hone down the cylinders to get previous glazing off.  rod bearings 'upper' are hardened and not cheap.  Lowers are standard issue.  The good thing is if those shells are good pan removal (not head) is all that is required to do rod bearings.

For just rings leave the engine in the car... It is a weekend project that way.

I need to change the rings on my 93 S4. Before I pull the engine to do this
job, is it possible/preferable to try to do this with the engine in the car.
The cylinders most likely don't need to be honed as that was done within the
last 8K.

The back story to this operation involves rebuilding the engine using rings
that I found on-line from an obscure website. Now compression is low,
mileage is low (22 instead of 24) and it failed CA smog. I've checked
EVERYTHING (FPR, injectors, plugs, O2), before discovering the low
compression: 2 at 100 to 1 at 160.

Your laughter and perfect hind-sighted advice are really unnecessary. What I
really need to know, besides the best procedure, is any BTDT regarding
unsuitable piston ring experience.
