[s-cars] Manually close sunroof process

I had the same problem and have not replaced the red cap because the Bentley
manual says it's a dealer-must procedure. If your roof was out of position
there's a good chance the gear-driven cable was slipping like mine was. Not
sure how to fix that issue besides dropping the headliner (mine needs that
anyway to replace the fabric cover) and cleaning / lubing it. Then setting
the positions back to factory and replacing the red cap.

Subject: [s-cars] Manually close sunroof process

My sunroof has been acting up recently (it would pop-up arbitrarily by
itself and then close itself a minute later). This has been ongoing for
several years but did it only once a month or so that it didn't bother me
enough to look into it. A few weeks ago, it seemed to lose home position -
I went to close it and it went past closed to the pop-up position even
though the dial was in the closed position. To get the sunroof to stay
closed I would turn it to slide it open but turn off the key and open the
door right as it was in the closed position.

Today, when I turned it to close it stopped a couple inches from full close.
If I turn the dial to pop-up, it did nothing - it thought it was already in
pop-up. It's supposed to rain tonight so I pulled the panel open, pried the
red cap off, and cranked the roof closed.

My question is - how do you replace the red cap? Without the red cap, the
motor runs but doesn't engage the sunroof gears so I can't really test to
know if it is working correctly now or not. I do know that I can drive like
this without worry of getting wet inside but I'll want to get this figured
out so I can enjoy the nice summer days.

Let me know if there is a secret to replacing this red cap. I tried using
my rubber mallet but didn't want to hammer it too hard for fear of breaking
something.

TIA,
