OK, thanks all. New fan clutch it is, then.
I did a quick look at a Spal fan and it pulls between 7 and 10 amps which is
quite something and would probably out weight savings of removing the clutch
and assorted gubbins.

It's feasible, but not really recommended. There's probably a writeup on QW
somewhere, but consensus is the electric fan applies more load to the system
than the viscous.
