In my case I didn't have any snap ring pliers or needle nose that would fit in the small holes of the snap ring and reach as far as it needed too. I used a couple of picks to get the snap ring out.   For reassembly I used some safety wire to hold the snap ring in the required size and then cut the wire once the ring was in place. If planning this job it would be a good idea to purchase some very long snap ring pliers beforehand.
