Dave, that's a great write up. Wish it had been around when I did my heater core - maybe I would have done it sooner and not let it sit for several months. Thanks for the advice and links you gave me over at Audiworld.
Pulling the radio only takes a couple of minutes if you have the removal tools, so that's what I did. The opening was too small for my hands, but I used a long slotted screwdriver to get the red and blue plugs off the heater box. I figured it'd be easier than trying to work behind the dash.
It's not a complicated job, but there are a lot of parts and it takes a while. I probably spent about 8 hours on it over a few weeks. The quote from the shop was for 6 hours of labor.
