Glad to hear everyone (except the wagon) is OK.
I bought a '02 VW New Beetle TDI a few months ago. I would have
preferred a 4-door Golf TDI, but the Beetle was what I found in
good condition and my price range. I love it.
It's not that fast off the line, but I've found myself doing
80 in it when I wasn't looking. Lots more torque off the line
than a comparable gas engine. And with a 60 mile (one-way)
commute, 47-48 MPG is nice. 600 miles a week and I fill up
only once a week.
Not that I don't miss my Audis, but the TDI is unpretentious
and very good at what it is. My Beetle is a Golf underneath,
so I get all that good German handling and road holding.
If you want to shop with an open mind, you might take a look at
the Cadillac CTS wagon, first available in 2009. You can get it
with AWD, and if you want power, there is a CTS-V version, 556 HP
and a manual, available in 2011. It gets great reviews.
