[s-cars] Odd Coolant Leak lasting 4 years

Paul,
I just dealt with the same problem of a slight coolant leak that only occurred during very cold weather and the car sitting several days between drives. I solved mine by tightening every coolant hose clamp while the car was cold, including that PIA Turbo coolant return hose under the manifold. BTW, stick with the OEM hose for that one and not a 350* rated silicone hose. I just bought a meter section of that hose from GAP for $17 IIRC. I was amazed that each hose clamp needed a bit of tightening after I checked and tightened them all about a year ago. My theory is when the ambient temperature is very cold, (20*F or less) the rubber coolant hoses will contract a bit and leak a little bit if the hose clamps are not tightened fully. Of course when the hoses are hot they will expand and possibly seal any tiny leak caused by a slightly loose clamp. Try the easy things first and make sure all the clamps are very tight. At the same time look on the garage floor or on the engine to see if you can isolate the location of the leak. If you are using G12 coolant any leak will leave a pinkish residue around the hose ends and/or engine surface where it burns off. It may also be possible that an old hose has developed a crack due to age and/or worm clamp pinching.

Subject: [s-cars] Coolant Leak
List-
I have a coolant leak with an odd presentation. So odd in fact, I've
had this leak for probably 4 years and still haven't dealt with it. It
only happens when it is cold out, I'm going to say below freezing, and
the car sits idle for more than a few (let's say two) days. Under these
circumstances, sometimes, not always, the coolant overflow tank will empty.
This last time I parked the car on Tuesday before T-day, was back on
Friday, and the coolant tank was empty. If I drive the car daily, no
problem. If it's warm, and the car sits for several days, no problem.
My solution up to this point has been to top off the overflow tank and
forget about it until the next time it happens.
Patient: 1995.5 S6.
Anyone ever experienced this?
Thanks!
Paul

Those tanks are a consumable item. They get brittle with age. I would replace it and see if the problem recurs.
Do you see any signs of leakage?
Best,
Lee

I've got the same.. only a small amount of loss when cold. Traced back
(using dye) under the front of the intake manifold, already replaced the
coolant hose under there with silicone but it seems from other posts that
the OE hose is the way to go... I'm going to pull my intake to see if I can
locate the exact source.

Interesting .... four years is a long time for a situation to remain static.
By that I mean not getting worse over the course of time with driving/use.
Have you noticed any increase in frequency, or a decrease in the time it
takes for it to leak down?

Peter, oe is definitely the way to go, however there has been recent talk of
late on quattroworld that there is a GM hose that comes close to, if not
meets the same spec as the Audi hose.
