Jay,

I vote for the braid on the starter.  Mine went out last year and the symptoms are exactly the same.  Namely, worked great then next time nothing.  I went with a rebuilt Bosch which has been fine ever since.  For a quick fix you could hard solder in a piece of wire to replace the braid.  When you remove the starter be sure to note which clips the wires go to.  Wired one way it will work and wired the other it will not.  Also might as well change the oil - the filter gets in the way.

That braid is actually positive, not ground - it delivers the power from the 
solenoid to the starter field winding.
Leave it to Bosch to do that with an uninsulated wire…
