A few weeks ago, I bought an 85k mile 2005 S4 Avant to replace my trusty
158k mile 1996 urS6 Avant.

I was a little shocked to discover that the S4's oil consumption was top to
bottom of dipstick in less than 200 miles.

Car has been at Audi for a week of investigation. Result is that it's been
declared to be an oil 'user'. It's also failed a compression test. Minimum
outlay £3,000 for investigation and ring replacement. Could be scored
cylinder walls in which case it's £15,000 for a long block engine.

I'm going with the buy-back option that the dealer has offered.

Stick to the old Audis. They might leak a bit of oil from cam cover gaskets
and oil pressure sensors, but at least they don't burn it!
