JR,
You are pretty much on your own for what particular chinese cable you
are investing in. I have seen mixed reports from individuals
purchasing these for use on the UrS4/6 vehicles. Here is a link to a
forum page on Quattroworld. The poster's screen name is underlined
and maybe blue indicating it is a link (to his email address) so you
can ask him directly what cable he had success with. The cables all
indicate they work with VAG-COM 409 which is the last version of the
software that does not require a registered cable/dongle. It is
equivalent to the VCDS LITE software available on the ross-tech.com
website.
If the UrS4 or 6 is the only vehicle you plan to use the software
with, the LITE version and pirate cables will be adequate for any
troubleshooting. There are a few expanded details for some codes, but
if you read the codes list on the ross-tech.com website, you will find
a full description for each code. There are additional functions on
the full featured version but I doubt you will find $300 worth for the
UrS4/6 cars. Ewe Ross has a full explanation of the utility of the
Lite version on the web site. That's pretty good service for free.
Just don't expect any phone help on using something you are getting
for free.
If you have newer Audi vehicles in the fleet, then the full version of
the software and the cable direct from ross-tech.com will be needed.
There are many more modules/sensors supported with the newer software
versions and these are not supported by LITE.
Be aware that this VCDS system, whether cheap ass chinese pirate cable
or full featured version, is simply a code reader and means of
modifying the software coding of the vehicle. It is not a substitute
for a qualified tech and won't tell you how to repair your car.
That's where the repair manual comes in.
