I strugled with the same problem when replacing the fuel tank on my son's
car in October. Having the tank out in the open allowed me to put my hand
inside and turn the pump with its basket. It needs to be turned
counter-clockwise about 15 deg., IIRC. If you can fit a 6-inch flat metal
bar with square edges into two of the four notches that the 3240 tool uses,
you may have enough leverage to turn the whole thing. I used a slim chisel,
because it fit and it had a handle, which gave me a good grip.
Having said all that, if you have to do this on you stomach inside the
trunk, breathing the fumes, I'd suggest borrowing the tool.
