Dave,

Thanks for the fuel pump R&R writeup. I had planned to replace my fuel pump after noticing some symptoms like the power leveling out at high rpm under full throttle, but procrastinated for two years after getting the parts. Yesterday the car wouldn't start and was sitting in the parking lot at my office. I ended up changing the fuel pump in the parking lot this afternoon. It was a nice and breezy day, great for ventilating the gas fumes.

One suggestion for revising the writeup: loosen the retaining ring before disconnecting the fuel hoses and banjo. I tried to use pieces of wood but the ring wasn't moving, so I ended up using a screwdriver wrapped in many layers of duct tape. It would have been better to use a brass drift but I didn't have one. I pounded the screwdriver so hard that it gouged the edge of the ring, and the ring barely moved. Just enough for me to get a small screwdriver into one of the slots and lever against the pin. I used progressively larger screwdrivers in several of the slots and eventually got the ring off.

Thanks also to JC, who gave me some advice and helpful hints, starting two years ago when I bought a Deatschwerks DW300 fuel pump.

The car started almost immediately, and is running well. I have to change the fuel filter and relay the fuel pump, but I was able to drive the car back home. It feels stronger at high rpm and high boost - no more leveling off.
