Paul,
Step #1 determine if the key is emitting an infra red beam.
Turn on your smart phone, start your camera app..Point your key at the lens of the camera and press the button.
If you see a "white" dot appear on the IR emitter it's working. If you don't see a dot then your key isn't emitting an
infra red beam and it isn't the car.

The IR remote on my 95 S6 stopped
working last winter and I'm trying to
get it working again. I've replaced the batteries with
the correct type
of battery and verified they are installed correctly -
2-positive down
towards the key end and 2-negative down towards the key ring
end.
I've tried to follow the manual for programming the control
unit with
the key codes but haven't had any luck. Here are the
instructions I
followed:
1. Insert any key into the steering lock and switch on the
ignition
(turned to ON position but did not start vehicle)
2. Lock the vehicle with another key on the driver's side.
Remove the key.
3. Point the key whose code is to be programmed at the IR
sensor and
briefly press the transmitter button on the key once (to
program this
key for memory position #1).
4. The anti-theft alarm should sound briefly after each
signal to
confirm proper reception.
5. Wait 5 seconds after entering the last pulse and then
press the
button once again. The vehicle should unlock and the
programming is
finished.
I don't ever get the anti-theft alarm signal in step #4
above. Could my
IR receiver have died? Any troubleshooting wisdom from
the list?
TIA,
