Would have been my first thought as well and I went so far as to convert to the Apikol loom and 1.8T coils but to no avail. The issue in my case was the ECU and the symptoms were exactly as Tom described.

BTW, Tom, the sarcasm in my response to your post was directed at the shop, not you. It came across to me as them trying to scare the daylights out of you with a fancy(albeit correct) name and outlandish price, when you probably know good and well what an ECU is and at least have an inkling of where to find a good used one. With all the conversions to VEMS and other standalone systems there are good used ones out there to be had for fair prices. 

A known good one from a reputable lister or QW Forum regular is probably your fix.
