From what I read, AGM batteries will suffer reduced life from the heat of overcharging (particularly if you do extended travel) if your voltage regulator is set to the typical flooded cell 14.4V. Basically the same charging voltage required for a battery tender apply to the cars charging system. The recommendation said stick to the OEM type battery (they specifically mentioned some BMW's, Porsche's and NA and NB Miata's were designed for AGM batteries). It also said engine compartment heat will shorten the life of AGM batteries, which is why NC Miata's (no idea on the new ND) are designed for flooded cell batteries.
