I think your post has a clue for how best to proceed, Peter.  
A cable for the C4 chassis is common to all models built on this chassis so there should be many of these languishing unloved in salvage yards everywhere.  You should be able to have your pick at any of the yards that cater to pick and pull or will in this case anyway.  That will allow you to find one in excellent condition, and any of the small parts that make up the release system;
