Hi Peter,
Both Bosch and Interstate make correctly fitting high quality batteries,
though they're on the pricey side. The Odyssey PC-1220 is also a good
fit, is a great battery, but is even more expensive (but lasts years and
starts the car even in the coldest weather).
A more affordable battery that is still of acceptable quality can be
found at Walmart. Their EverStart MAXX branded battery is available in
a Group 41 model that works just fine, though in really cold weather
(around -40C/F or colder) it can be a little hard starting. I forget who
makes their EverStart MAXX batteries, but I recall when I looked into it
a few years ago it was one of the better battery manufacturers.
I've used all these batteries over the years in my '93 S4, and they all
fit correctly. With the exception of the Odyssey all could be connected
to the vent properly with some fiddling around with a 90 degree vent
hose elbow as I recall.
The Odyssey doesn't require venting (the manufacturer claims). I never
had it vented and never had a problem, though if you want to you can
unseal the vent hole (there are two sealed vent holes available) and use
it.
Kind regards,
Dave
