[s-cars] Sunroof is stuck open

Tom,

In case you are unfamiliar about the Allen Crank spoken of on the other posts:

1. CAREFULLY pull down the control panel from the windshield end. Care must be used because 20+ year old plastics have become quite brittle and the various tabs are VERY easy to break.

2. Remove the cranklike (5 mm, I think) Allen wrench from the inside of the Sunroof Control panel.

3. Insert the Allen end of "crank" into the fitting at the large end of the black sunroof motor that's inside the panel opening. At least on mine, you do need to press inward on the socket to engage the crank to the SR. Turn in whatever direction closes the roof while pressing in.

4. If you think the potentiometer is bad, and you can't take care of things now, you may want to disconnect the wiring that goes from the potentiometer to the harness inside the headliner. After that's done, gently reinstall the panel, if you break tabs, J B Weld sort of works, most other adhesives didn't work for me.

This always worked until I eventually replaced the control panel and potentiometer.

About a year ago it started making a rasping sound so I stopped using it. About two weeks ago I returned from a two-week vacation to find a dead battery. I live on a hill so I started the car by coasting down our street and releasing the clutch. The car started and with the surge of electricity the sunroof opened spontaneously although the control know was in the closed position.
