The problem with that is the admin is AWOL. we have no contact with the owners of this list, server, not domain.

I’d volunteer time and effort to keeping the domain and list serve running vs  moving to FaceBook. I realize it has lots of nice things but in the interest of privacy, identity protection, security and productivity,  I tend to avoid the application.
Count me in if we have to move, but I’d rather stick to email frankly.
