Subject: re. [urq] Dash swap questions
Jason,
I am just finishing up on my dash swap from a 4kQ. Here is some of my experience. This job took several days for me, even though weemngly trivial, so allow plenty of time. A lot of time consumed by wiring for stereo and switch retrofitting, and general cleanup.
1. You need the center console from a 4kQ AFAIK ( or updated UrQ). The dash basically mounts using the same nuts - see diagram for details.
2. The Instrument cluster can be retrofitted, but you will need to take apart the complete cluster assembly from the 4kq apart down to the guage boards (don't disassemble completly). Doing the same with the UrQ cluster and install the cluster board guages and all. The differences in the bevels and plexglass etc. require the swap which will be obvious when you are doing the job. Good time to fix the broken ODO gear.
3. As my wiring was otherwise good, I had to splice in connectors for the light switches and window switches. Not a 1-1 wiring correspondence and I consulted both car diagrams.
4. You will have to find a quattro or other plaque. They are held on with sticky glue and can be pried off.
5. I was able to fit the diff. lock switch in the 4kq switch panel. My solution was to gut a 4kq rear window lockout switch and use the case to fit in a modified diff. lock switch - cut square to fit in the tiny case and drilled hole through the push-button for cosmetic look underneath pull-knob. I may use the remaining rear-window switch holes to mount the diff lock lights - probably will reconfigure in future to use the QSW light panel and possibly retrofit the two-position diff. lock switch. Right now, I'm just trying to get the car roadworthy, so saving the niceties for later.
6. Used large wire tie in place of plastic stick in recess of glove to hold in place - I left some slack for easier service, and it can be dropped down to remove console (again - BTDT). Not everything screwed up solidly, but once fitted, hangs good good enough to hold about 25 lbs.
7. HVAC controls are different, but I retained the '83 with integrated AC switch. Used soldering gun to melt a slot in tab where it interferes on left-side of console. You'll know what I'm talking about when you re-assemble. Only need to remove a tiny bit of plastic and then get good fit.
Advice I should follow myself - don't sweat the small stuff unless you find something buried you don't want to deal with later. I found a lot of these things and attended to them up-front, but the job took longer than it should have.
Good-luck!
Ben
[Ok, ive sourced myself a cheap CGT dash but ive got some questions.
Will i be able to use the Ur cluster?
Is it possible, and with what, to replace the "CoupeGT" plaq on the passenger side? I know the later Ur's had a similar dash with a "quattro"
What to do about the CGT dash having less working switches around the cluster?
And if someone could link me to the site where that guy did the dash swap maybe that will help me some. I've forgotten the link.
Thanks,
Jason]
