Ok folks, here's the carnage, parental guidance recommended for youngsters:

Amazingly, it seems as if I could just throw a new piston in #1, throw on a
new head and have the car running again.

Looks like Exh. Valve #1 just snapped off at the head. Looking back, I think
I may have driven half a lap with the engine like this before I realized what
had happened, I remember boost and power beginning to fall and wondering what
was wrong, it wasn't until the Carousel (Sears Point) that something was
drastically wrong, with a cloud of white smoke billowing out the exh. I believe
it was at that point that the piston floor finally gave way, filling the comb.
chamber with oil - until that point I was running on 4 cyl.

Anyhoo, enjoy, comments welcome.

I'm in the mid-stages of a 2.3 20v motor build, ported head, o-ringed with
copper head gasket, JE pistons and Forged Rods, header, Garrett GT turbo, 034efi
(of course) etc, should have her running by Feb.
