[urq] ball joints, tie rods, etc

Sorry if this was posted twice, I got a failure notice after sending first time

Hey guys- 
OK.  So I plan to replace these (ball joints, tie rods, tie rod ends) items this January.  Unless I'm completely waisting money - which i seem to do plenty of....anyway, how do I tell if my ball joints are worn or getting there?  Or is it best to just go ahead and do it so as not to have to worry about it later?  I don't want to have to rear into the suspension _again_ in 6 months.  What about tie rod ends.  I'm pretty sure the boots are torn on my rear ones...so I should replace those now "while I'm in there"
