Gary,
Thanks for posting this to the list.  Yes, I too have had a flaky chip
on an UrQ, and just a reprogram fixed it.  It is just further
confirmation of chips gone bad.  See below.

My son-in-law has a 2000 S4.  The VAG 1551 said that there was
difficulty reading the ROM (sporadic fault) and as long as it could not
get a good checksum it would fail to start.  The installation of a
performance chip fixed it.

Just wanted to toss out an email thanking everybody for the
suggestions on things to check when my '82 ur-q suddenly decided to
not start after a heater core replacement.

All the wiring, fuses, sensor, & signals checked out OK.

Thanks to a rather lengthy email from Eric Fluhr (that included a
couple different copies of MAC-02 code) and a local electronics store,
I was able to burn a new EPROM and swap it out for the suspect one I
had.

With the new chip, the car fired right up!
