Mike,
Sounds like either the cable refused to work (I am assuming this is an '83 or '84) or vacuum.
As for the rear diff... it's unrelated and it's a common problem.
The seal wears a groove in the flange and over time the seal will leak.
Even a new seal will not work well if the flange is worn badly BTDT... you might even need a rapair sleeve (very thin and slips over the flange to fix the groove).
